About the Training

This workshop will show you how to identify a news story about your cause and pitch it to reporters.

You know the news affects how people think about politics and social issues.  Yet you may be intimidated about pitching your own organization's work to reporters.  Fear not! This workshop will teach you what you need to know about:

  • How to identify newsworthy stories in the work you do
  • Which media outlets are most likely to cover them
  • How to pitch the story to a reporter

By the end of the workshop you'll not only have a story and a plan for pitching it, you'll also have a longterm strategy for identifying newsworthy stories at your organization on an ongoing basis.

About the Trainer

Debbie Girard is a seasoned public relations professional, specializing in media relations and honing the skills needed to pitch story ideas to reporters. She has worked in PR for over 15 years in both the private and public sectors—from a large, multinational auto manufacturer to a risk management member association. Over the years, she has learned how to take the “No, not interested, don’t bother me” response from a reporter and convert it to “Oh yeah? Tell me more about it.”  She'll teach you how to do it too!
